It is increasingly common for local councils and authorities to require Non-Destructive Digging (NDD) or Hydro Excavation as part of new development projects including driveways, crossovers, pool installations, and other construction works.
At Arbor Analytics, we specialise in providing comprehensive, start-to-finish tree root investigations, including on-site Hydro Excavation/NDD, Arboricultural Impact Assessments, and Tree Root Investigation Reports.
All assessments are conducted in accordance with AS 4970:2025 – Protection of Trees on Development Sites, ensuring compliance, accuracy, and the best outcomes for both development and tree health.
Why Use Hydro Excavation / NDD?
Hydro Excavation and NDD use high-pressure water and vacuum extraction to gently expose roots in the soil profile. This method avoids the damage caused by mechanical excavation and is considered best practice for investigating structural roots.
This allows us to accurately determine:
- Root depth and spread
- Whether roots extend into proposed construction zones
- The significance of exposed roots (structural vs non-structural)
- Likely impacts to tree health during and after works
- Feasible design or construction modifications to protect trees
